Health & Genetic Guarantee
At Papillon Puppies Home, we prioritize the health and well-being of every puppy we raise. While Papillons are generally a hardy breed, responsible breeding includes proactive screening for hereditary conditions. Below, we outline common health considerations and our commitment to transparency.
Common Health Considerations in Papillons
- Patellar Luxation
A condition where the kneecap dislocates, causing intermittent lameness. Reputable breeders screen for this through OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) evaluations. - Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
A degenerative eye disease leading to blindness. We require CERF (Canine Eye Registry Foundation) certifications for all breeding adults to ensure clear vision. - Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)
Though rare in Papillons, this inherited condition can affect vision. Our breeding pairs are DNA-tested to eliminate this risk. - Deafness
Some lines may develop late-onset hearing loss. We avoid breeding dogs with a history of auditory issues. - Dental & Oral Health
Due to their small size, Papillons can be prone to dental crowding. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.
Our Health Guarantee
- All breeding adults undergo OFA hip/patella evaluations, CERF eye exams, and genetic testing for breed-specific conditions.
- Puppies receive veterinary health checks before placement, including vaccinations and deworming.
- We provide a written health guarantee against life-threatening genetic disorders for the first year.
Your Role in Preventive Care
- Maintain regular vet visits, including annual eye exams and dental cleanings.
- Avoid obesity, which can exacerbate joint issues in small breeds.
- Provide appropriate exercise—avoid excessive jumping to protect delicate joints.
Transparency & Certification
We proudly share all health clearances via OFA.org and CERF. Prospective owners receive documentation of parental testing upon request.
Note: While we minimize risks through rigorous testing, no breed is entirely free of health concerns. We encourage pet insurance for lifelong coverage.
